The PBL on dynamics will introduce students to the essential concepts underlying the principles of movement and conservation of energy. Students will also apply algebraic and geometric concepts related to transformations on a coordinate plane to collaboratively design and build a life-size maze. Along with the study of motion, students will construct a Pumpkin Chunkin’ launching device (Trebuchet/Catapult) to test Newton’s Laws and acceleration due to gravity and interpret the results of the quantitative data. Students will then demonstrate their design process, final design, and functionality of the launching device in a Pumpkin Chunkin’ Contest.
For this PBL, the students will work collaboratively in groups of three. Student teams will research and design a Pumpkin Chunkin’ launching device. They will then write an Engineering Design Report and build a model of their design. Student groups will also participate and demonstrate the launching device in a Pumpkin Chunkin’ contest.
Students will apply the design process to test the effects of Newton's Laws an acceleration due to gravity.
You can use a variety of materials:
Drill and Bits
Cutters for metal
Heavy object (three different ones are shown on the far left) only 1 needed
wire or bread ties
Electrical tape (or masking)
3 feet of string
piece of cloth - 6 inches.
1 sheet of cardpaper -similar to cereal box (shown under the paints)
Students meet 5 times per week for 1 hr for about 3 to 4 weeks.
About $20 to $40.
Teams of 4 to 5 students of 9th graders.
