Describe the Activity:

The USA Mathematical Talent Search (USAMTS) is a free mathematics competition open to all United States middle and high school students.

As opposed to most mathematics competitions, the USAMTS allows students a full month , or more, to work out their solutions. Carefully written justifications are required for each problem. The problems range in difficulty from being within the reach of most high school students to challenging the best students in the nation. Students may use any materials - books, calculators, computers - but all the work must be their own. The USAMTS is run on the honor system - it is an individual competition, whose competitive role is very secondary. (Although we do give prizes.)

Time Details:

There are 3 rounds of problems, which have specified due dates. The 2017-2018 contest dates will be available soon. Check back at http://www.usamts.org/Problems/U_Problems.php for more information.

Cost Details:

Free to download and submit problems

People Details:

Students should submit work individually. They can consult books and resources to help solve the problems, but all work must be their own. They are not allowed to consult with other students or ‘live’ online help. After each round, students will receive individualized feedback on their work, along with a score.

Prize Details:

Top scorers are eligible to receive prizes, which may include books and software. The USAMTS is also one of the ways to enter the process of selecting the USA Mathematical Olympiad team, which participates in the International Mathematical Olympiad. Participants who score well will be invited to participate in the American Invitational Mathematics Examination, the second step in the process of selecting the USA Mathematical Olympiad team.

Outcome of the Activity:
Students will develop problem solving skills, improve their technical writing, and mature mathematically.
